Christmas Cantata Performed at Huntsville Branch

The Madison County Community Choir Performed their Christmas Cantata at the Huntsville Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday Dec. 9th.  The afternoon performance featured choir members of all denominations and the cantata “Sing We All Noel”.

The choir members prepare for the Christmas performances for about three months. Performances were held at the Huntsville United Methodist Church, the Huntsville LDS Branch and the Marble United Baptist Church.  Huntsville Branch members Susie Copenhaver and James Copenhaver have performed with the choir for several years.  Other members of the branch participated as readers during the cantata.

After the performance, finger foods and desserts were served to the public.  Choir members commented on how great it was singing in the new chapel because of the amazing acoustics.  It was a great opportunity for the public to see the new building and feel the Christmas Spirit through song.

Relief Society Sisters Give at Thanksgiving

The Relief Society Sisters of the Huntsville Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints served the Thanksgiving Meal at the Madison County Senior Citizen’s Center in November. The sisters not only acted as servers but went in the day before and decorated the center and tables with a Thanksgiving theme.  This is the second year that the sisters have taken on this project. The center provides a lunch meal to the elderly in the county for a small donation.  The older people in the community appreciate the special treatment they receive. The branch missionaries jumped at the chance to help serve and had a great time. The directors of the center have been so thrilled with the extra help and impressed with the beautiful way the sisters decorate, the sisters returned in December to decorate for the Christmas meal.

3rd Annual Veteran’s Breakfast

The Huntsville Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held their 3rd annual Veteran’s Breakfast on the first Saturday in November. The event was kicked-off with the presentation of the flag by members of the local American Legion.  A breakfast of biscuits, gravy, pancakes, eggs, and sausage was enjoyed by more than thirty veterans and their guests.  Sister Linda Elmore once again headed up the committee and was thrilled with the turnout.

Unprecedented Numbers of New Missionaries

Following the announcement made my President Monson in the October 2012 General Conference, new missionary applications rocketed by 471%, going from about 700 per week to about 4000 each week. Within that there has been a dramatic rise in the number of young women sending in applications. “Prior to the announcement, approximately 15 percent of missionaries were young women.” Now we're seeing equal amount of both young men and women applying.

The rush of applications after the announcement have slowed somewhat but “the number of post-announcement applications is still double what it has been in the past.”

To read more about the new missionary statistics, what the MTC's are doing to accommodate this rise in missionary numbers, and Elder Nelson debunking rumors about going into new countries, read the full article here.

Our Stake has a Missionary Preparation Class for all those preparing to go on missions. Please ask your bishop for more details.
